Heat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl beat butter, sugars, vanilla and salt for four minutes. Then work in the flour.
On a lightly floured board roll out one third of the dough at a time to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into shapes using cutters about 1 inch in diameter. Another option is cut the dough into about 1 inch squares then use a cookie stamp on each cookie of your chosen design. Place on ungreased cooking sheets.
Bake 15 to 20 minutes, until lightly colored and firm to the touch; do not overbrown. Remove from oven and transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool. They store well wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in a plastic container. The recipe makes about 90 cookies.
